Since 1999 Nissan has been part of the Renault-Nissan Alliance, a partnership with the French manufacturer Renault. The companies share a CEO, and each company has a share in the other.

As well as making traditional automobiles, Nissan was also the world’s largest manufacturer of electric vehicles as at December 2016. In fact, the Nissan Leaf is the world’s top-selling highway-capable electric car with more than 200,000 sold worldwide.

The Nissan name was first used in the 1930s, but the company was originally a large holding company with several different companies. They did not become a car manufacturer until one of its companies merged with DAT Jidosha Seizo, the car manufacturer formed in 1914. Nissan Motor Co Ltd did not come into being until 1934.

Nissan cars are known for their easy handling. As Japan’s third most popular brand, it can often be overlooked but the cars are actually very reliable and user friendly. Thanks to Nissan’s alliance with Renault it has access to new platforms and technologies which has served to reinforce its status as an innovator in the industry.
